In a city where safety is paramount, the digital presence of the Newark Department of Public Safety serves as an online point of contact, giving the community important information and resources. The effort to improve this online presence brought together myself, Marcus Zeal, the team at DeCheser Media, and the team at Newark PD. Together we set out to redesign the Newark Public Safety website so it reflects the city and gives people a clear, easy-to-use experience.
Uncovering User Insights
Diving Deep: Setting the UX Review Objectives
The first phase of the project started with a full UX (User Experience) review led by the team at DeCheser Media. The goal was clear: study how people currently used the website and find the areas that needed work. This review went beyond a quick look. It was a close analysis of the site's user interface and overall user satisfaction, which gave us a solid base for the design phase ahead.
Methodical Approach: Tools of the Trade
Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods, the team carefully examined user behavior and feedback. Surveys, interviews, and analytics made up the toolkit they used to build a full picture of the website's usability. This approach supported a thorough analysis, so every possible area for improvement was identified and considered.
Designing the Blueprint
Conceptualization: Sculpting Unity from Disparity
As we moved into the design phase, we faced a key task: combine the separate websites of each major group under the Newark Public Safety umbrella into one unified digital platform.
The earlier split was a source of confusion for users. Our aim was to clear up that confusion by building a single website that was easy to navigate and good to look at, while still representing each public safety division.
Navigating Challenges: Staying Afloat Amidst Turnovers
The work had its share of hurdles. Team turnovers from promotions, retirements, and elections created challenges. Even so, the team at DeCheser Media handled these shifts well and kept the project on track through the changes.
Bridging Concepts to Code
From Sketch to Screen: The Development Voyage
Development began in December 2021, and the design sketches started turning into real digital pages. This phase was not just about coding. It was about giving the designs life, making sure every pixel matched the mission of Newark Public Safety.
Overcoming Hurdles: The Turnover Tide
The development phase had its own challenges too. Team turnovers from elections, retirements, and promotions raised a particular problem: updating the team members shown on the website. Adding content was straightforward, but keeping the constantly changing team structure accurate on the site proved harder. With steady work between our team and the Newark PD, we kept the website current and accurately reflecting the team as it stood.
A Digital Dawn: The Launch and Beyond
Unveiling the Digital Guardian: Launch Highlights
May 2023 marked the launch of the rebuilt Newark Public Safety website. This was more than a technical rollout. It was a real step toward better public engagement and safety awareness. The new website now stood as one platform, clearly representing each public safety division while giving people a clear, easy-to-use experience.
Sailing Smooth: Continuous Updates and Support
Our work didn't stop after launch. We keep providing ongoing support so the website stays current as team members change. The project showed a steady commitment to keep the site ready, in line with the watchful spirit of Newark Public Safety.

Reflecting on a Rewarding Voyage
Celebrating Collaboration: A Harmonious Journey
Working with the team at DeCheser Media and the team at Newark Police Department and Public Safety has been a genuine pleasure. The good working relationship, professionalism, and shared vision led to a successful project that went well beyond a simple digital update.
Fostering Future: An Ongoing Partnership
The launch was not the end, but the start of an ongoing partnership. Our shared commitment to keeping the Newark Public Safety website a reliable, up-to-date resource shows how durable this collaboration is, and points to a good road ahead for everyone involved.
